I recently wrote an e-mail in response to a webpage claiming to be a resource for anarchy.
I was looking for a broader perspective on the subject, as I'm sure opinions vary on this
topic as they tend to do on everything else. It just then hit me how astonishing
"lifestylist" anarchists are today. Some people go overboard on the use of the
L-word, but I was astounded to find just what some people interperate as Anarchy. I came
across a site which had a hefty assortment of resources; everything someone would need to
be a mad bomber, the anti-christ, or a pedophile. But how does Anarchy fit into all this?
I was particularly proud of the large graphic which simply said "HELL". So I
wrote an e-mail, which I dont' have a copy of because first of all, I use pine, a popular
UNIX e-mail client, which is very simple, and I don't usually take the time to save sent
messages, and even if with that in mind I was using a web-based form to send my e-mail. I
said something to the effect of the things I've said in the previous ramblings on this
page, except it was only a one or two liner.
The response I got? Have a look for yourself:
shutup dude just because u are against anarchism dont mean u kan blame it all on me so fuck u
Of course, I couldn't just sit by and let this go on without getting my piece in, being the preaching fool I am. So I promptly sent a reply:
Against anarchism? I'm all for anarchism. I just like to talk with C's and
think there's more to it [anarchy]. I'm sure you have a real grasp on what
anarchy
is. I'm glad I have people like you to represent all those who are against
class war, beaurocratic abuse and poverty.
Which is exactly what we need to be aware of. Governments and corporations must love to have people like this person around, and I mean that very non-sarcastically. Any "decent" person (I put decent in quotations because, really, who am I to judge on something like that, but by that I mean a mature, respectable person by current society's standards) wouldn't pay any attention to this person. This, of course, is a very dangerous thing for those who are not aware of what "real" anarchy is, because they go "Ah hah! So this is what it is! No wonder all those rebellious teenagers like it so much!", and this of course dirties the name of anarchy for all, and we are forever subjected to a label. So those people claiming to be anarchists by those terms are, in a way, the enemy of any anarchist who's idealogy is based on the faults of society as we know it.
But then again, I try not to throw the term "lifestylist" around so much. Just because you aren't a grubby punk-rocker with piercings and purple hair doesn't mean you can't be an anarchist, even though anarchy is a very punk-rock thing to believe in.
